Tuesday Closing Bell: Markets Close Mixed on Another Desultory Day

November 12, 2013: U.S. equity markets opened lower Tuesday morning on another day when no U.S. data of interest was released. Tomorrow looks like another quiet day for U.S. data. Most of the big earnings reports are behind us as well, so there's not a lot for investors and traders to get excited about.

European and Latin American markets closed lower today while Asian markets closed mixed.

Wednesday's calendar includes speeches by Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke and Cleveland Fed President Sandra Pianalto and the following scheduled data releases and events (all times Eastern):

7:00 a.m. – Mortgage Bankers Association purchase applications 10:00 a.m. – Atlanta Fed business inflation expectations 11:30 a.m. – 4- and 52-week bill auctions 1:00 p.m. – 10-year note auction 2:00 p.m. – Treasury budget

Big Earnings Movers: Hanwha SolarOne Co. (NASDAQ: HSOL) is down 13.9% at $4.36. D.R. Horton Inc. (NYSE: DHI) is up 4.7% at $18.91 on good earnings boosted by land sales.

Stocks on the Move: Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: VNDA) is up 95.8% at $13.29 on FDA recommendation for approval of its sleep drug for the blind. Sarepta Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: SRPT) is down 64.3% at $13.05 following an FDA rejection of the company's bid to fast-track muscular dystrophy drug. U.S. Airways Group Inc. (NYSE: LCC) is up 1.1% at $23.53 after reaching an agreement with the Department of Justice that will let the company go ahead with its American Airlines merger.

In all, 92 NYSE stocks put up new 52-week highs today, while 38 stocks posted new lows.
