AAPL, GOOG Take 80% of Smartphone Shipments In Q1, Says IDC

In case you missed it, research firm IDC this morning offers up its latest assessment of the smartphone world, with analyst Ramon Llamas stating that Apple‘s (AAPL) iOS operating system and Google‘s (GOOG) Androidoperating system, combined, made up 80% of the 152.3 million smartphones shipped in Q1 of this year, with iOS having 23% share of all device sales and Android having 59% share.

Noting that the combined share has risen from 54.4% a year earlier, Llamas opines that competitors must secure the loyalty of program developers, because “developer intentions or enthusiasm for a particular operating system is typically a leading indicator of hardware sales success.”

Though probably hardware sales success is also a leading cause of developer interest, some would say.

Apple’s share of smartphone sales rose from 18% a year earlier, while Android’s rose from 36.7%. The “Symbian” operating system still used on some devices by Nokia (NOK) and others fell from 26% to 6.8%.

Research in Motion‘s (RIMM) BlackBerry slipped from 13.6% to 6.4%; The Linux operating system was down from 3.1% to 2.3% in Q1; and Microsoft‘s (MSFT) “Windows Phone” was at 2.2%, down from 2.6% a year earlier.
