Various Species Of Cockroaches In The Home

There are 4000 different species of cockroach in the world. Only 3, however, are known to invade our homes & workplaces and cause problems. There are several other species that are similar, but can be found in the home a little less often. Every cockroach is slightly varied & has its own particular features. Nonetheless, they are all pests that can cause great health risks & damage to us and the people we love.

Identifying these roaches is quite simple and can aid in extermination techniques. It could be the first step in eradication & control. The following are the 3 main types of cockroaches.

American Cockroach

The American cockroach can grow up to 25mm in length. It has a reddish brown color & single stripe on the head. These roaches get easily attracted to liquor. Thus, they are often found in bars or at home after party where beer, wine & alcohol was present. They can live for around one and half years, and have an incubation period of 6 to 8 weeks.

German Cockroach

The German cockroach has two lighter stripes on the back of its head, and sport a brownish or tan color. They can grow up to lengths of 15mm. It is probably the fastest breeding in comparison to the cockroaches, giving birth to around 30 to 40 nymphs with an incubation period of 30 days. At this rate, one cockroach can multiply into 30,000 in just a year. They can live for around 6 months.

Oriental Cockroach

They are probably the biggest of these 3. It grows approximately 25mm in length. They move more slowly than the other species and are a dark brown or black color with a shiny body. They are sometimes called the water bug ’cause they like to live in damp, dark areas. They are most likely found in cellars or damp mulch. Incubation can last 2 months with about 15 eggs hatching and they can each live for up to two years.
